<image:caption>Lauren Moreno (she/her) is a Senior Consultant and the Director of Community Impact with Catalysis LLC, a boutique consulting collective serving mission-driven leaders and organizations. In her facilitation work with teams, she enjoys creating space and systems that unleash the power of groups to envision and realize the future they want to see. Lauren spent over a decade developing and leading innovative science communication programs at Pacific Science Center and Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. She has facilitated training workshops and provided mentorship for hundreds of STEM professionals seeking to develop and practice their communication skills. Lauren emphasizes that effective science communication is never about “dumbing it down.” At its core, science communication is about creating meaning and relevance for your audience, whether that’s your mom or an evening news reporter. Lauren has served as Principal Investigator or in leadership roles for several National Science Foundation education grants and served on the Institute for Learning Innovation board of directors from 2015 – 2021. She is endlessly fascinated with exploring new science topics, these days often driven by her two-year-old’s perennial question: “Why?”</image:caption>

<image:title>WIS PDX Events - Oregon Bioscience Association: Bio in the High Desert - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>Central Oregon’s bioscience infrastructure is remarkably robust, especially in manufacturing. New investments in contract Research and Development services, as well as OSU-Cascades’ upcoming Innovation District, point to a broadening of bioscience capabilities in the region. Case in point: Bend Bioscience, whose new R&D and Innovation lab in Bend, Oregon opened this past February, with plans for more expansion. Our panel guests will include two key Bend Bioscience team members: Michael Grass, Head of Drug Delivery Innovation, and Amber Broadbent, Head of Product and Portfolio Development. Bio in the High Desert – going strong for fifteen years now – returns with its classic mix of programming and networking. During our program, we’ll engage invited speakers who will share perspectives regarding Central Oregon’s bio-economy. We’ll also welcome new Oregon Bio members and share other Oregon Bio news. We’ll meet at Deschutes Brewery’s Mountain Room, enjoying a generous spread of hors d’oeuvres with wine, beer, or soft beverages. May 18, 2023 Reception: 5 – 5:45 p.m. | Program: 5:45 – 6:30 p.m. | Networking: 6:30 – 8 p.m. Tickets – Oregon Bio Members* * All employees of Oregon Bio Member companies are eligible $35: Early bird online rate $55: Standard online rate $75: At the door – subject to availability Tickets – Non Members: $75: Standard online rate $90: At the door – subject to availability</image:caption>

<image:title>WIS Blog - Hybrid modeling: The complexity of learning to learn - Task 1: Paint a landscape with grass, sky, and some flowers. Artist 1's answer: She knows that the sky is blue, grass is green, and usually, flowers have warm and vivid colors. Artist 2's answer: She knows that the sky is blue due to the scattering of shorter-wavelength blue light by molecules and small particles in the Earth's atmosphere. The green color of grass results from the reflection of green light by the chlorophyll pigment in plant cells, as it is the part of the spectrum of visible light that is not absorbed by chlorophyll during photosynthesis. She has also read that the color of a flower is determined by the presence of pigments such as chlorophyll (which makes plants green), carotenoids (which create yellow and orange colors), and various types of anthocyanins (which produce red, blue, and purple hues). Both artists will correctly paint their task. Task 2: We include a new element in the landscape, a cat on the grass. Artist 1's answer: In some of the thousands of examples that the first artist has learned, she has seen a brown cat. So, she paints it with that color. Artist 2's answer: She has never heard about cats, so she won’t know what to do. "Maybe there is an error in the specification," she thinks; and since it is on the grass, she will paint it green too. Artist 2 fails. Task 3: The landscape has a sunset. Artist 1's answer: She knows that a sunset should be colorful, so she paints it with several colors without considering the position of the colors. Artist 2's answer: But the second artist knows that she must add new colors to the sky that transition from red at the bottom to blue at the top. Artist 1 fails.</image:title>

Her concentration on machine learning and data science has cultivated a strong interest in data, encompassing visualization, ETL (extract, transform, load), and modeling. As a Latin American woman, she considers herself fortunate to occupy her current position. Nevertheless, she also recognizes her responsibility to turn science into a multicultural space, reducing the gap between those who have access to it.</image:title>

<image:title>WIS Blog - Leveling Up: A Brief History of Women’s Pay Equity - In 1960, the FDA approved the first-ever birth control pill. The pill was championed by Margaret Sanger and funded by heiress Katherine McCormick, and for the first time gave women control of when they would have children. While this was not done as a pay parity move, it is perhaps “step zero” along our walk through pay equity history. Step one happened on June 10th, 1963–only sixty years ago–when the Equal Pay Act was signed into law. This law prohibited paying two employees of different genders differently when they worked the same job, at the same establishment, under the same working conditions–and excluded all white collar workers and contractors. The Equal Pay Act spent nineteen years in Congress after its original introduction in 1944 by Congresswoman Winifred Stanley. In the 60’s, when it finally passed, women were making roughly 60 cents to the dollar earned by a man in a comparable job. The Equal Pay Act was reinforced and strengthened by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, of which Title VII banned gender discrimination in hiring practices. In 1972, Title IX banned gender discrimination in education and all federally funded activities. Many programs had to rescind their quotas limiting the number of women admitted to graduate school, professional endeavors, and more. One of the principal authors of this legislation was Patsy Mink, the first woman of color in Congress! In 1974, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act allowed women to finally open bank accounts without needing a signature from husbands or fathers. They were also allowed to have credit cards in their own name.</image:title>
<image:caption>In fourteen short years, women gained rights over their bodies, the chance to protect their own finances, and the rights (on paper) to be educated, hired, and paid equally to a man. That is an insane pace of progress for women’s rights!</image:caption>
